We met at Travis' cabin on Sunday where my camper had been parked for a month since we last
rendezvoused. I checked the water lines and celebrated with Jack Daniels that the
intervening storm had not frozen and broken any lines. Travis broiled up steaks that night and the next morning we had a casserole that Susan had made for us. Monday we moved to elk camp. Last year's site was occupied by a too-close neighbor, so we found a secluded site - in the sun. Tuesday we scouted the hunt area.

Wednesday was blustery so we stayed in camp. That night it snowed. Opening day Thursday, we were the first hunters in our area - broke ice in the ditches. Travis took a spill off the rock pile and hurt his shoulder and blurred his vision. He went to town to get checked and was diagnosed has having an eye contusion and in need of a shower. Davie and I hunted the afternoon and Don gabbed with the road maintenance crew and Game and Fish officer. That night the temp dipped to 9 degrees and the hot-water pipes froze, confirming the theory that hot water pipes freeze faster than cold water pipes. They thawed without problem when the sun rose. Friday we tested Don's principle that he has never shot an elk before nine o'clock. We found a better hunt area where someone had shot one earlier in the day. Saturday Davie's 6-wheeler lost its brakes so Travis and I made one last hunt.

We broke camp since hunter storm warnings were on broadcast on the radio. We avoided a white-out and ten-plus inches of snow that fell on Sunday. Good camp - no elk.
