Sand Spring

Travis and Susan got Don out of the house to go four-wheeling south of Green Mountain. It sounded like fun so I asked to go along. We met at Jeffrey City. We had plenty of bug repellent to ward off deer flies and mosquitoes but Susan was still vulnerable in kulaks and a sleeveless top. The destination was Sand Spring, an ice-cold gushing spring out in the desert. It looked like a giant Antlion death trap. We saw a few bands of horses that were too curious and good looking to be wild horses. Cactus were blooming like bouquets (this one's worth clicking). We found a hill where there was a 100-yard string of rocks in the shape of an arrow of speculative significance - Indians pointing to a medicine ring? pointing to good hunting grounds? Travis got stuck in a steep-sided portion of Crooks Creek, with cows all around watching. Don and I crossed over in a better spot and tied up to Travis mule-train like and barely managed to extract him with wheels spinning and mud flying. The cows ran for cover. We found a few scraggly aspen to have lunch by. Travis shared sardines and cheese sticks and chips and a salsa with bite that makes me drool writing about it. I provided beer without realizing until today it was non-alcoholic. We got directions from two cow-pokes, one wearing a pistol, how to get back to the mine where we started.
