In Bettendorf we celebrated Veronica's 60th birthday with the Chicago clan and the next door neighbors. James and Joann make an international couple blending the best of Mississippi and Greece. He has a taste for fine wine that he generously tried to develop in us all in one night. Roni crossed over into the sixties very gracefully. James got a kick out of how Roni and Dix laughed the same laugh. Ron made it until 11 p.m. before succumbing to his glasses of vin on the rocks. The following day developed very slowly for son and me until we were rehydrated.
We had a surprise party at a local Mexican restaurant.
Beer was drunk in moderation but when the Mariachis and Margaritas cranked up, the party was again on.
The picture captures Joan with a look "I married this guy?"
Josh and Benjamin got along famously.
Back to the house, James uncorked a fine Chilean Shiraz-something for the gentlemen and a wussie white for the ladies and we watched a video of Roni skydiving when she had turned 50. Someone let the neighbor dog in and little Biscuit went into an intense barking fit defending her new territory with half a dozen adults adding to the commotion.
During the night Chris locked himself out of the house while taking Biscuit for a walk in the frigid ice and snow. He tried to raise Joan by tapping on what he thought was their bedroom window but was in fact the garage. Meanwhile our college-age niece Michelle thought there was a burglar and rousted me up to defend. Before I could say "Wait up!" she bravely threw open the front door since she had me as backup standing behind her in my long underwear. I was glad to see Chris, frozen as he was.
