We had a nice call from brother Don today. It's been a month since we've talked due to travel. Since then he has performed a hat trick of 1) quitting his job, 2) taking an assignment as a reporter for their local diocesan newspaper, and 3) enrolling in a correspondence course with the Augustine Institute in Denver leading to a doctorate in theology. He'll attend on campus for a few weeks next summer.
The job he quit was one he took after retiring from Lucent as an electrical engineer. No letter of resignation - just told his overbearing boss to take this job and shove it during a dispute. The boss (owner) offered him incentive to stay but the only thing Don was interested in was that the owner leave his own company.
The reporting job resulted from responding to a newspaper ad. They paid him $100 for his first article. He says it's easy because the sponsors at the functions he reports on are publicity hounds and they will treat a reporter very solicitously. He's trying to interpret his editor's gift to him of The Elements of Style.
Inspired by Don's industriousness, Dix went out and washed the car. As for me I am considering putting off retirement a couple more years.
