We were awakened from our Saturday nap by the whistle of the neighbor's steam engine. This guy is a retired but still passionate Southern Pacific train engineer that built a working train from scratch - one of four in the country. His shop is outfitted with South Bend lathes. The steam engine is fired with coal and is quite a sight when spewing steam and glowing cinders. In no time, crowds are drawn from passing traffic and locals. It's always exciting - things are always going wrong - a valve malfunction, or an injector failure, or as happened a few weeks ago, a derailment on the curve. The engineer's buddy rides caboose and makes sure the passengers keep their arms in and are leaning right.
