The Acropolis at Athens. Pictures cannot raise the hair on your arms as seeing the Temple of Athena in person.What amazing feats of art and engineering were performed by the ancient Greeks in honor of their gods and search for immortality. In our age we have other beliefs to comfort us when faced with death but we still have our doubts, maybe more so.
The temple is presently being restored using massive cranes - actually disassembling it to repair the deterioration of the marble caused by using cement and iron bolts in an earlier attempt to preserve the ruins.
The cruise started in Istanbul - and we got to see a little of the city by bus. We were anxious to ship out with the unrest of Turkey poising to invade Iraq.
At Troy, nine cities were built over the previous settlements and finally covered with sediment.

Ephesus, Turkey had a city of small dark homes with common walls to the neighbor without windows. The stone blocks were shaped and stacked without mortar. Dix took this photo out the porthole - and got a reflection of our cabin with flowers on the vanity.
