Elk Camp - Part Deux

After the storm front passed through, I replenished the camper stores and hauled it back up the mountain. Travis joined me the next morning. He really liked my choice of campsite - one with a BIG fire pit. There was practically no other hunters, no Game and Fish officers, no Forest Service rangers, no deer, no moose and no elk. However, we conducted a very diligent hunt and were proud of our effort. We were on the rock pile by 6:30 a.m. and sat tight there for 3-1/2 hours (which is a record for me - "Happy Feet" is Dave's nick name for me). Then Travis combed the woods for an hour to flush any elk out towards me. None fell for that. Then we hiked together nearly down to Rock Creek and back up the mountain. Then we collected a load of Aspen for cooking. Back to camp for cocktails and a steak dinner. By 7 p.m. we were too exhausted to do dishes and retired straight to bed.

We broke camp on the third day and headed out as vehicle after vehicle of weekend campers were coming in. I love to be counterflow to the mainstream traffic. Stopped in on the judge in Riverton to see how he was convalescing from his back surgery. He was not much company, as he admitted. I had to laugh later when his better half related she had to give him his weekly straighten-up lecture.
