River Float

Last Saturday was Dix's first trip down the river in a kayak. She had bravado leading up to this day but now she noted the weatherman said there would be rain. This would be her only attempt to get out of it, feebly at that.
We started out at seven in morning. Our first sight were the pelicans and their new clutch of eight babies. They were separated from the adults and so at first I thought they were a group of small ducks. When they realized we were there they scooted back and hid along the bank. They were just precious as could be with their big beaks. A little further down the river we saw a deer crossing. At first I thought it was a duck (just the head was visible, you see). Dix thought it was a moose and said to herself, think, there are no mooses around here. Our next sighting was couple of Blue Herons. We surprised them in a little cove and when they tried to fly up, they looked like they were dancing a ballet. A little more up the river we spotted another family of pelicans with nine little ones. There were plenty of swallows and King birds and a few Cormorants. Dix was hearing Bob Whites but I don't think they range into Wyoming. It was a beautiful day, it started out cool, by the time the trip was over at 11, it was getting hot.
